German Diversity Day at the University of Cologne – May 19, 2026
To mark German Diversity Day on May 19, 2026, the Office for Equal Opportunity cordially invites all students and staff to an open event in the atrium of the Philosophikum.
The goal is to raise awareness of issues related to diversity and equal opportunity, encourage discussion, and spark further dialogue.
Programm
Information Session (2:00 – 4:00 p.m.)
During an open information session, interested individuals will have the opportunity to learn in an accessible setting about programs, initiatives, and key topics related to diversity and equal opportunity at the University of Cologne. The Atrium, as an open space, invites people to drop by spontaneously, stop for a moment, and engage in conversation.
Panel Discussion (4:00 – 6:00 p.m.)
“Staying in Dialogue: Science Communication in Polarized Debates.”
The event will begin with a panel discussion of approximately 45 minutes, followed by an open discussion with the audience.
The focus will be on the question of how scientific communication and social dialogue can succeed when debates are becoming increasingly polarized. The discussion will also address the responsibilities of universities in this context and how spaces for constructive exchange can be created.

- Professor Dr Sophia Falkenstörfer, W3 Professor of Didactics and Digitalisation in the field of Special Educational Needs with a focus on Physical and Motor Development, University of Cologne
- Dr Elisabeth Hoffmann, Chief Communications Officer, University of Cologne
Chair: Dr Britt Dahmen, Head of the Equal Opportunities Department
Together, they bring a range of perspectives from research management, academic research and teaching, university communications, and civic engagement. They will examine the challenges as well as concrete strategies for responding to politicised attacks on academia.
The event is open to all interested parties; registration is not required.
In addition, the day will offer a first glimpse into the program for Diversity Week 2026 at the University of Cologne.
