BIPOC*- Employee Network
Whether in technical services or administration, in research or teaching – the University of Cologne thrives on the diversity within our communities!
What is the Purpose of the Network?
The network aims to make BIPoC* perspectives visible, strengthen solidarity, and create „safer spaces“ where our experiences, voices, and contributions are acknowledged and valued. We are committed to fostering a work environment that critically examines and actively works against racism, colonial legacies, and other forms of discrimination. We want to offer a respectful and supportive environment in which you can feel welcome – whether you are new to the University or have been here for many years.
Intersectionality is a central principle for us: We recognize that discrimination can occur in overlapping and interconnected ways. With our BIPoC* network, we aim to create “safer and braver spaces” for all BIPoC* employees at the University, including (for example) queer BIPoC*, Jewish BIPoC*, and BIPoC* employees with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. Through this work, we seek to promote both individual and collective empowerment and to strengthen solidarity alliances within and beyond the University.
Who is the Network for?
This network is open to all employees of the University of Cologne who identify or position themselves as BIPoC* (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) – regardless of your individual experiences, cultural or familial backgrounds, or multiple identities. If you are looking for a space to connect with other BIPoC* colleagues, to exchange experiences, and to uplift one another, you are warmly welcome to join us. Please feel free to get in touch rassismuskritik@verw.uni-koeln.de.
Collaboration and Networking
We see our network as part of a broader commitment to equity, justice, and diversity at the University of Cologne. This also involves working together with other university-based initiatives and networks – such as the queer network UNI Q*ÖLN, feminist networks, and networks for employees with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. Together, we aim to strengthen intersectional perspectives and support structures in which diversity, self-determination, and belonging are lived and recognized as fundamental values.
We will decide together which topics we explore, how we organize ourselves, and which initiatives we want to move forward as a community. Every voice matters, and each individual experience enriches and strengthens our network.
We warmly look forward to welcoming everyone who wishes to help create a space where BIPoC* employees can be visible, heard, supported, and connected.
