Room of Silence
The "Room of Silence" was officially opened on 20 November 2017 at the University of Cologne. During the long planning phase, it was possible to draw on the experience of other universities and develop the concept for the room.
The Vice Rector for Equality and Diversity, Prof.' Dr. Manuela Günter, is pleased that the university's created offer allows "different needs and cultures to meet".
The space is committed to the principle of neutrality, so that a free and individual use is possible. From yoga exercises to autogenic training and prayer, all silent activities are permitted. The university provides chairs, mats and pillows for this purpose. You may also bring your own prayer mats, religious symbols or meditation pillows. The University of Cologne thus creates a place of retreat that can be used in various ways. The most important prerequisites are a respectful and considerate interaction as well as silence and mindfulness.
The Room of Silence is available to all members and employees of the university. A transponder is required for access, which is handed out by the building administration in the Main Building in return for a deposit. The room itself is located in the basement of Wing 2 of the Main Building and can be reached accessibly via the main entrance of the University and can be accessed barrier-free. The opening hours are Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
