Self-designation

Often there are several names for marginalized groups. One (or more) name that the marginalized group chooses for itself: that is the self-designation. And one (or more) names that the majority society uses to talk about the marginalized group: this is the attribution. Self-naming is empowering. It conveys a positive sense of we. Attribution, on the other hand, makes the marginalized group Other: In this context, we also speak of othering. It often takes a long time for self-designations to take hold. An example of a self-designation is Person of Color.
