Microagressions
Microaggressions refer to subtle, everyday verbal, non-verbal, or behavioral exchanges that convey derogatory, dismissive, or negative messages toward individuals or groups who are socially marginalized. These actions often draw upon and reproduce historically entrenched stereotypes related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, or other axes of social inequality. Importantly, microaggressions may be enacted either intentionally or unintentionally, and their significance does not depend on the conscious intent of the perpetrator. Consequently, microaggressions should be understood not as isolated interpersonal slights, but as part of broader systems of power that shape lived experiences within unequal social contexts.
Racial Microaggression
Racial microaggressions are constant jibes and barbs. They are everyday verbal or behavioural expressions, whether intentional or unintentional, that convey or imply hostile or derogatory racist insults and slights towards BIPOCs (for example, the pseudo-compliment to a BIPOC person: “You speak German really well?”).
They have a negative impact on job satisfaction, academic performance, self-esteem, and mental health.
