Othering

The term othering (from the English other = "different") describes the use of and distancing and differentiation from other groups in order to confirm one's own 'normality'. The concept of othering emerged from the context of postcolonial theory. Othering also involves attributing negative characteristics to people or groups that differentiate them from the perceived normative social group. Othering is a permanent act of demarcation, categorization, and ultimately a distinction between an "us" and "the others."
