Othering
Othering describes the distancing and differentiation from other groups in order to affirm one’s one “normality”. The concept of othering originates from postcolonial theory. Othering also involves attributing negative characteristics to people or groups that distinguish them from the perceived normative social group. It is a continuous act of categorisation, ultimately creating a distinction between “us” and “them”.
